The Popular Dog Breeds in America

The American Kennel Association(AKC) released their stats on the most popular dog breeds in the United States, and not surprisingly some all-time favorites topped the list. From classic pups like the Golden Retriever and the German Shepherd, here are the popular dog breeds.

 

  • Labrador Retriever

Labradors come in four colors: black, yellow, chocolate, and off-white. The most common are black and yellow. They are intelligent, alert, and empathetic. The character is docile and smooth, neither dull nor overactive. They are friendly, loyal, and especially enjoy playing games with others.

 

 

 

  • German Shepherd

Despite a large and sometimes intimidating appearance, German Shepherds are often gentle, intelligent dogs with a reputation for being hard working and loyal pets. The German Shepherd’s high level of intelligence, curious nature and keen senses make them a popular guard dog, and they’re known to be highly protective of their family and territory.

 

 

  • Golden Retriever

Much like the Labrador Retriever, the Golden Retriever is renowned for its friendly nature, smarts and abilities as a working dog. Often used as a guide dog, the Golden Retriever’s loyal and playful disposition makes them a popular pick for families with small children.

Golden Retrievers are one of the most common domestic dogs . They are lively, enthusiastic, alert, confident, and have likable personalities. The Golden Retriever is the fourth most intelligent dog breed in the world.

 

 

  • Beagle

Cute, compact and even-tempered, beagles were originally bred as hunting dogs, thanks to their ability to sniff-out prey from great distances. Beagles are also renowned for their ability to quickly warm-up strangers, making them less than ideal as guard dogs but great for sociable owners.

Since Beagles like to bark and make noise when they are in groups, it is best to keep a single one in the family to correct their bad habit of barking.

 

 

  • Bulldog

Bulldogs are generally obedient and laid back. They are docile and friendly, which are ideal for those with a small yard at home. It has a large, broad head with deep wrinkles on its face. The jaws are strong and powerful, and the teeth strong. The neck is short, thick and strong. The trunk is thick and powerful, and the limbs are strong.

Bred in medium, miniature and toy sizes, the poodle is an active, intelligent dog with a penchant for mischief. Their knack for rambunctious play is no doubt reflected in their name, as the word poodle roughly translates to the German word pudle, meaning “to splash about.”

Lively, extremely approachable, they are a faithful dog breed. They are very agile, intelligent and graceful dogs with powerful and confident strides.
